Days 179-180: Back to Chinese Lessons

Thursday we had our first Chinese lesson in a long time with Deborah. "Long time, no see," she greeted us in Chinese. It was a really good session: we spent a lot of time going over things that we wanted to review, mostly things that came up in our cultural interactions. Spaghetti and broccoli for dinner.

Friday we did our first Chinese group lesson in awhile. Our new teacher is named Michelle. Navin, Samira, the Japanese prof, Kerry, and I were there, and we all had the Beginners' class last term. However, Farris Harram, the Iraqi professor, his wife, and two children were there as well, and they are completely new to Chinese. I tried to be very cordial to them, shaking hands with him and his wife and giving the children cookies. I don't want them to think that all Americans are jerks. The little girl, who's about seven, is quite an artist: she was drawing pictures of ponies from My Little Pony on the chalkboard after class.

Michelle's approach is more loose than Wang Laoshi, and she wants to use a textbook that looks much harder than our other one. Still, even though she went over she went over some things I know already (introductions, numbers, etc.), she also talked about how to say things like "This is my book," which I didn't know. So I can't say I didn't learn from her.

After class, we headed over to the bookstore to buy the new book--55 RMB. We invited the Iraqi family to practice with us. I hope they do--it would be nice to get to know them. Then Kerry and I had sandwiches at Ciao Cafe, as usual, and he went on to gaming and I took the bus home. I had beans and cheese and crackers for dinner; later, when he got home, he ordered some McDonald's. I spent much of the evening working on my first presentation for Thailand. We went to bed late.

Practicing greetings.
"Is this your book?"
