Days 186-187: Chinese Lessons Continue, Work Continues

Thursday: another Chinese lesson with Deborah. We reviewed a few more things and then focus on Chapter 12 in the older Chinese book. Afterwards, we went and had tea with a friend of ours and met her cat. She's so cute! She mentioned that we could possibly take her home back to the US with us, and Kerry is now planning for a new kitty. Kerry loves how she purrs and purrs very loudly. I'm still a bit skeptical, but I am open to the idea. I also finished up my transgender presentation today and started in on my reading for The Scarlet Letter. In the morning, I assigned my Short Novels students their partners for leading discussion via WeChat. (I wonder more and more why we don't use WeChat in the US--it's amazing, convenient, and the students are VERY into it!!) At the end of the day, we found out that Zach is on the plane to Detroit! He's actually coming! And Carol was able to buy him a train ticket. It is kind of exciting that we are FINALLY going to have a visitor who will stay with us.

Friday, we had our group Chinese class. Lots of people showed up today, including the Iraqi family again. Still haven't seen Guillermo or Carlo from last semester, though. We ran into Anna, the Hungarian teacher, before class. When we asked her if she was coming, she said, "No...because...no."  Clearly she had a a reason. The first half of the class was pretty much a pronunciation review, and the second half of the class focused on introductions and learning countries that people were from. I guess it was meant to prepare us for the first chapter in the text. Michelle, the new teacher, is okay, but I definitely prefer Wang Laoshi, last term's teacher. Michelle just seems more humorless, more scattered, and a bit more strict. We left class early today to drop off the "notification" form for Grace, confirming that Zach's coming to stay with us for a bit. Later in the evening, we learned that Zach had arrived safe and sound in China and was at his hotel. We have invited some folks to have dinner with us on the days that he is here. Hopefully that will work out and be fun. Most people seem interested so far, so that's good. I spent part of the evening re-reading The Scarlet Letter, which is always interesting, even though I've probably read it 20+ times now. Kerry arrived home around 11:15 pm from gaming.
